Preparing Your Greenhouse for this winter A to do list for greenhouse winter preparation Many people will think this is too early to start preparing your greenhouse for winter, but now is the perfect time. With our busy schedules it is important to plan ahead and not be left scrambling at the last minute trying to get a heater overnighted for tomorrows first blast of winter weather. One of the most important things is to do your annual cleaning. If you have plants and other items in the greenhouse, empty them all out. Do a good thorough cleaning with mild soap and water. Clean the greenhouse inside and out. Besides making it look better, this is the best way to control disease in your greenhouse. If you are putting plants back in check them out and make sure they are in tip top condition. While you are handling each plant individually it is easiest to give it any necessary extra care like pruning or fertilizing. Take a quick inventory of all of the extras you are putting in your greenhouse. Are there several bags of potting soil that can be consolidated? Are all of the tools needed in the greenhouse, or did some just get dropped there. Put everything in neat order. If you do not have a potting bench or area now would be the perfect time to add one. Once the greenhouse is clean and dry check for any disrepair. Are there air leaks that will cost you more to heat this winter? Does any caulking need replaced. Look at your glass, polycarbonate or polyfilm coverings and assess them. You may need to replace some of these items also. Next check your equipment. Fire up the heater and make sure that it comes on. Clean it up good and do any necessary repairs to it. Do you have automatic window openers? Are you going to remove the cylinders and store them this winter? It is probably too early to do this, but keep it in the back of your mind. Look at your benching. Is it all in good shape, or are any of the legs loose? Do you have your circulating fans in place and are they operating properly? Just simply take a look at everything and make sure it does not need any repair. Also, be sure to order any replacement or repair parts when you find them. Do not wait until the last minute. Finally, once you have everything cleaned, sealed, and in excellent working condition you can move your plants back in and rest easy at night knowing you are ready for the cold winter days ahead. |
